San Gimignano

San Gimignano, known as the Manhattan of the Middle Ages, is a medieval village in the province of Siena, of Etruscan origin.

Despite the passing of the centuries, San Gimignano still retains its original appearance and is unquestionably one of the most precious jewels of Tuscany.
From wherever you arrive, San Gimignano rises on a hill 334 meters high, from which dominates the Elsa Valley, announced by its 14 towers.

It is said that in the fourteenth century there were even 72, at least one for each wealthy family, who thus demonstrated their economic power.
Declared Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1990, San Gimignano is visited each year by millions of Italians and international tourists.

The village of San Gimignano is surrounded by over 2000 meters in the thirteenth century walls, within which, among ancient brick and stone buildings, stand out for their beauty Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza Duomo, with the People's Palace and the Collegiate, which enchants tourists with its beautiful frescoes.

There are five gates to the historic village, but the two most important are undoubtedly Porta San Matteo, within walking distance from the beautiful Church of St. Augustine (home to important works of art such as the frescoes of Benozzo Gozzoli); and Porta San Giovanni, which opens on the Via Francigena, today the main street in the center of San Gimignano.

Thanks to the Via Francigena, the town of San Gimignano has enjoyed until the mid-fourteenth century, an important economic and artistic richness, about merchants and pilgrims who climbed it. Even today, the Via Francigena is a real cultural attraction for the city: many are the pilgrims who choose to point out them alone or rely on the countless itineraries that concern.

San Gimignano, outside the medieval walls, is surrounded by landscapes that look like paintings: here hills, olive groves and vineyards are very valuable lands, capable of giving high-level products such as Vernaccia and saffron.

Tognazzi Holiday House offers apartments in the historic center of San Gimignano, such as Casa La Viola, with its wonderful views of the towers, and in the surrounding countryside, where the structures, embedded in nature, have a swimming pool, garden, barbecue and picnic areas for outdoor dining.
